Basic Chords in the Major Scale

The basic chords in the major scale are major, minor, and diminished.  A good way to practice these chords and to understand the banjo neck is to play a scale of eight chords in a row, where those chords have a root on the same string.   The scale of chords goes like this:  major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished, major.

For example, play G major with root on the fourth string, then Am with root on the fourth string, then Bm, then C major, then D major, then E minor, then F# diminished, and finally up to G major an octave above the first chord you played.  Do this for chords with roots on the third string and also for chords with roots on the second string, and you will quickly make some mental progress in music, even if you are just a banjo player.

     Again, the order is :      M m m M M m d M
